Akron Ascent Innovations received a new production machine this week.  The machine was designed through a partnership with the New Zealand based electrospinning company Revolution Fibres.  “The new machine is a massive step forward in terms of scale-up because it allows us to optimize our formulation for a needle-free production line,” said AAI Chief Operating Officer Dr. Kevin White.  “The actual machine offers a moderate increase in sample size, but an immense improvement in production rate that allows us to get more products into people’s hands, which to me is the most important thing right now.”

As part of the overall expansion, AAI has also included a separate office space in its lease from the Akron Global Business Accelerator (AGBA) and brought 2 new summer interns onto the team.  Additional scale-up efforts are underway outside of the lab through partners.  “I can’t say much yet, but the initial results, in terms of scale and quality, seem very promising and have us excited,” said Dr. White.  AAI is aiming to complete a capital raise of $1-2M, including federal matches and supplemental programs, by the fall of this year, in order to further expand laboratory capabilities and continue to move forward in a transition to industrial-scale production capacity.
